NOTES for Luk 4:16-44
The prophecy was fulfilled in Christ. But whom is it speaking about? We can still understand why healing is given to the brokenhearted, release to captives, and sight to the blind. But why is joy promised only to the poor, and freedom only to the oppressed? And what does this have to do with me? Of course I sometimes feel oppressed, but not all the time! It is no wonder that not everyone in the synagogue reacted appropriately... Yet perhaps we should try reading this passage once more and seek to grasp the meaning of these words, discovering within ourselves our need, our thirst for liberation and healing. Otherwise Jesus will have to go to another town again...
