NOTES for Isa 30:1-31:9

Israel is in a difficult position—the Assyrian invasion is beginning. It is so natural to seek a powerful ally, someone who could protect them from disaster. Egypt is nearby, so let us become its friend against Assyria. Never mind that the Egyptians are pagans or that this will require associating with pagans, sitting at the same table, and breaking God’s Law—everything for the good of the people, everything for salvation... But Isaiah reminds them: Israel has a mighty Protector; there is One who promised His help; there is a God of justice, and blessed are all who trust in Him. Israel is faithless and ungrateful, yet God is ready to show His goodness even to the ungrateful. But to receive this goodness, one must turn toward Him.
