NOTES for Ki1 6:1-38

Many hands labored in the building of the Temple, but we can rightly call it Solomon’s Temple. For it was Solomon whom the Lord enabled to become the earthly organizer of the construction, and it was he who brought together the efforts of all the craftsmen. And now before us is a verbal blueprint of the Temple.

To specialists, the details of the Temple listed here can reveal much about its architectural features, the building techniques of that time, and the abilities of the ancient craftsmen. For all of us who have no opportunity to see the original Temple with our own eyes, whether or not we are such specialists, its description enables us to reach through time and space and touch its stones.

But that is not all. The detailed description of the Temple, which recalls the description of the Tabernacle of the Covenant placed in the Book alongside the most important commandments, emphasizes that there are rules which may seem optional to some, yet are important and should not be departed from. Service to God requires special concentration, so no detail here can be a matter of chance or a trifle. Great works begin with small things.
