NOTES for Lev 14:33-57

At first glance, these prescriptions seem concerned only with ensuring proper sanitary conditions for household objects and dwellings. To prevent an epidemic or pestilence from spreading, the Israelites had to watch for all kinds of fungal and other growths on vessels, clothing, and walls. But if we look more deeply into the text, we can discern another proclamation here: the created world is to be sanctified; it too must belong to God and remain pure and unspoiled. This mystery will be revealed to the New Testament Church (Romans 8:20-23). For us, this message reveals the need to sanctify (dedicate to God and heal) the whole world around us—living and nonliving nature, land, water, air, as well as all the objects that surround us: our homes, household articles, vessels, food—everything God created for Himself and which rightfully belongs to Him.
