The gatekeepers and keepers of the treasuries seem to do nothing more than attend to household and everyday affairs. They do not perform sacred rites or stand in prayer directly before the altar. Yet their service in the temple is so essential that without it the priests would find it difficult to do what they have been appointed to do. It is entirely fitting that they are appointed by King David himself, who understands the necessity of their work.
Behind the prosaic cares entrusted to the gatekeepers and keepers—or, in modern terms, to caretakers and guards—lies the need to keep the temple orderly and in proper condition. Nothing here can be dismissed as a trifle, and this means that everyone involved with the temple also shares in the sacraments celebrated there.
