NOTES for Ch2 14:1-15

King Asa rules piously, and there is nothing surprising in the fact that success accompanies his undertakings, for the Lord is on his side. Of course, Asa not only brings order to worship, but also builds cities and military fortifications and takes care of the army. Yet without reliance on the Lord, none of these measures would have helped him withstand his enemies.

Everything would be well, but in the middle of the account of Asa's reign we unexpectedly come across words he spoke: “The land is still ours.” This short phrase sounds like an inadvertent prophecy. Behind it we glimpse both the king's uncertainty that his descendants will worthily continue his efforts and his sober understanding of how easily people yield to sinful temptations.

But this does not become a reason to give up. Human circumstances are unstable, but the Lord is dependable. Relying on Him, the king continues his work.
