NOTES for Мф 12:38-42

How frightening freedom is... Responsibility inevitably follows it. Free choice is our problem, our headache. Even choosing yogurt in a supermarket is unbearably difficult for us, because if we make the wrong choice we alone will be at fault, and we are afraid of being found at fault. Therefore, sometimes even unconsciously, we seek a lack of freedom, decisions imposed by necessity, proofs and signs, just as the scribes and Pharisees do in Matthew's Gospel. But refusing the freedom to choose is itself a decision for which we must answer. Refusing to see the signs of God's action in our life and demanding ever more proofs puts us in the wrong before God even in comparison with repentant pagans.
