NOTES for Luk 22:31-53
The carefree times are over—if once the apostles could preach without a penny and without bread in their bag, now even a sword cannot save them or their Teacher. There are times when God does not grant even the prayer of the most righteous person and when one cannot trust even oneself. Jesus must drink His cup, while Peter deceives himself by assuring his Teacher of faithfulness unto death. What are we to do when “the hour of the lawless and the power of darkness” comes? If the apostles did not know, how can we know? All they have left are Jesus’ words: “I have prayed that your faith may not fail...” Faith that, even in darkness, everything remains in God’s hands...
