NOTES for Eze 6:1-14
From ancient times, mountains symbolized the possibility of communion between God and human beings; it was on a mountain that He spoke both with Moses and with Elijah, and mountains are mentioned more than once in the Psalms. But a time came when the mountains were defiled by idols and pagan rites. Places where people had hoped to touch the Source of life became deadly.
Yet it is precisely now, when, as in the days of Elijah, pagan deeds are visible everywhere one looks, that the prophecy of a faithful remnant resounds. Despite its small numbers, this remnant becomes a pledge that the whole people will not perish on false paths, the seed of the people’s healing from the maladies of sin. Alas, many will turn away from the Lord and refuse to receive salvation from Him, continuing to put their hope in deadly idols. They will defile and devastate the land. But the One to whom the faithful remnant prays, not only on the mountains but in every place, has the power to cleanse the land and all of us.
