NOTES for Mat 13:1-9

The people around Jesus probably listened in bewilderment to this story of a farmer who did not spare seed for roads, weeds and rocks. After all, an ordinary farmer sows where he hopes to reap a harvest. And perhaps this moment of bewilderment and surprise was meant to lead them to a strange thought: a harvest is expected from every little seed, wherever it falls. God speaks to everyone—not to the chosen, not to the most capable and perceptive, not to the worthy, but to everyone! And then he gives a person an astonishing ability: to choose for themselves what they will be in relation to the Word, where it will land—on the asphalt, among the burdocks or somewhere else. And he spares neither effort nor words, because the riskiest sowing may turn out to be the most fruitful—if only a person sees in God's actions the hope of success.
