NOTES for Co1 1:26-31
Paul does not flatter those to whom he writes... Would you enjoy reading words like these: just look at yourselves—you are neither wise nor powerful... It is sad, but objective. Paul describes the real situation rather than singing their praises. And the Lord also looks at us in this way—objectively. However much He loves each one of us, He will not claim that we possess gifts and good qualities that we do not in fact have. What He does is far better, though not especially flattering to our pride. He takes what is there—and acts Himself. He gives gifts that were not naturally implanted in us. What is required of us is to receive His gifts, use them for His glory, and never forget from whom they come.
