NOTES for Pro 30:5-9
Today's reading is especially frightening for anyone who tries to say anything at all about God. “Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you and you be found a liar,” says the Wise One. To be honest, one feels like timidly falling silent for fear of accidentally saying something wrong. But is that what the Lord wants? Probably not. He sent His disciples to preach His Word, and He also calls each of us to do so. This leaves a narrow path: on one side is the temptation not to speak about Him at all, and on the other, the temptation to “add something to His words.” Surely we are not called to express ourselves only in quotations from the Bible? Of course not. The point is that when we speak—and even when we think—about Him, we must not replace Him, the Living and True God, with our own ideas about Him; we must remember that He is always greater than any of our suppositions.
