Through an inspiration unfathomable to us, a prophecy came forth from the psalmist’s heart whose meaning he himself could scarcely comprehend, still less his first listeners. But centuries would pass, and the New Testament would reveal both why the Lord addresses the Lord and who the priest according to the order of Melchizedek is.
Although understanding the Bible requires knowledge of the historical setting that accompanied the appearance of its books, they were written not for the needs of the passing moment but for all times. The Bible reveals to us the meaning of history’s course, while the Bible itself is revealed over the course of time. Therefore every perplexity that arises while reading it will surely be dispelled.
