NOTES for Gen 28:1-22
Jacob's vision has many interpretations. Many see in it an image of God's care for the world through angels. Others say that Jacob's ladder is a prophecy of the incarnation of the Son of God, who joined heaven and earth. In any case, this vision is one of the first biblical images of how the connection between the divine and the earthly is carried out: voice, light, angels, and the Word. Jacob receives a blessing and the confirmation of the promise given to Abraham and Isaac. God's respect for human choice is revealed here in full measure. Jacob bought the birthright for a bowl of lentil stew; Esau renounced the birthright. The agreement concluded by people on earth is recognized by God as valid forever, and now all the rights and responsibilities of the firstborn pass to Jacob, as do the blessing and the promise of the land.
