NOTES for Isa 19:1-25

Pagan Egypt, Israel's enemy since the time of the Exodus, brings the Lord's anger upon itself and is condemned to disaster. But, as with the other nations we have read about earlier, God does not want Egypt to disappear; he simply wants to bring it to himself. The picture portrayed in v. 25 is striking: the peaceful union of Egypt, Assyria, and Israel, three irreconcilable rivals. But this will happen, says the prophet Isaiah, and it is precisely for this, for the joy of all people, that the Savior, Christ the Lord, is born, uniting into a new humanity all who come to him.
