NOTES for Exo 16:1-36
Of course, the story of the manna also has a natural explanation, but the point is not what God uses for a miracle; the point is how, when, and why the miracle happens. The image of food appearing in the wilderness is an image that permeates our whole life. Against the background of dull dissatisfaction with life, depression, weariness, unwillingness to live, and constant complaints and claims against God, we daily encounter His active and merciful work in our world. He gives us strength to notice the beauty of creation and to realize that in the barren wilderness, with God's support, we become free only beside Him. We are free to choose miracle, mercy, and love instead of hopelessness, retribution, and death.
