NOTES for Exo 26:1-37

The Tabernacle of the Covenant is a tent, a kind of portable sanctuary, whose name is meant to remind people of God's constant and unseen presence. Its bright colors set the tabernacle apart against the desert landscape. Wherever you were, the blue and purple colors of the tent raised above the people would always refresh your understanding of how, why, and for what purpose this exhausting journey had been undertaken.

Closeness to God, on the one hand, defined and regulated the whole life of the people. On the other hand, this closeness required constant sacrifice, a renunciation of oneself and one's own desires for the sake of being able to live under God's protection and blessing. This difficult path required a special courage and a special attitude toward the outward appearance of the Tabernacle and everything connected with it. More about the meaning of each of its required attributes can be read in V. Sorokin's book.
