NOTES for Deu 7:1-26
God fulfills the promises given to Israel “because He loves” these people. Yet at the same time He promises “mercy to those who love Him for a thousand generations”—a reach extending to our own time and many thousands of years beyond us. Under this twofold condition of mutual love, He can entrust to us human beings His Son, born this night. The Son will be able to fulfill His calling and save His people—a people that everyone may now join—only when His eternal love and ours, earthly and weak yet nevertheless placed beside His mercy, are able to meet.
