NOTES for Luk 11:37-41

It is not the Lord's way to leave a rebuke without instruction, and today He speaks of the light given to people. In essence, He is saying that it is precisely our vision, clouded by sin and vanity, that deprives us of the ability to see the light and plunges our whole being into darkness. Because of this, we do not accept the sign of the prophet Jonah or recognise God's voice in Christ's words handed down to us in the Gospel. The Lord says of this human condition: ‘If [your eye] is bad, your body too will be dark.’ Conversely, if we try to free ourselves from sin, do all that lies within our power, and ask God for mercy and help where we are powerless, then we have the possibility of seeing Christ, coming to know and love Him—and then God's light will shine upon us.
