By the gift of God in this verse the apostle Paul means first of all the gift of the grace of the Holy Spirit, which makes people spiritually sighted, able to see good and evil, to distinguish between them and choose. As a result, the new life of a person who has become a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ becomes God's gift. In it there is no room for what the apostle in Galatians calls the works of the flesh, but there is room for the works of the Spirit, that is, for fulfilling Christ's commandment of love for one another.

It is our receiving the Spirit of God in Baptism that gives us all this, because without Him we are blind. Take ordinary gifts, as a parable, which all of us receive in abundance on birthdays. If we receive something complicated and completely unknown to us, we also need instructions in order to use the gift; otherwise it will have no meaning. The apostle tells us that God gives us His Spirit so that we can see what this new life is and make use of it.
