Proverbs, Chapter 9,  verses 1-6

1 The discipline, 4 and doctrine of wisdom
1 Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
2 She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
3 She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
4 Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
5 Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
6 Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

9  Christ, under the name of wisdom invites us to his entertainment, Pro 9:1-6.
Foretells the different successes of his invitation, Pro 9:7-9.
Shews the fruit of fearing God, Pro 9:10-12.
Sin, in the person of a foolish woman invites us to her entertainment, Pro 9:13-17.
Which ends in destruction, Pro 9:18.

9:1 Her house - For the reception of her guests. Seven - Many pillars; whereby is intimated the beauty and stability of the church.Pillars - Prophets, and apostles, and ministers.

9:2 Killed - Made provision for the guests. Mingled - With water, as they used to do in those hot countries. Furnished - With all necessaries, and now waits for the guests.

9:3 Maidens - Her servants to invite the guests, ministers of the word whom he calls maidens for the decency of the parable; for wisdom being compared to a great princess, was fit to be attended upon by maidens.Highest places - From such high seats as those from which judges delivered their sentences, and officers made proclamations.

9:4 Simple - Ignorant, and weak.

Ephesians, Chapter 5,  verses 15-20

15 to walk warily, 18 and to be filled with the Spirit
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

5:15 Circumspectly - Exactly, with the utmost accuracy, getting to the highest pitch of every point of holiness. Not as fools - Who think not where they are going, or do not make the best of their way.

5:16 With all possible care redeeming the time - Saving all you can for the best purposes; buying every possible moment out of the hands of sin and Satan; out of the hands of sloth, ease, pleasure, worldly business; the more diligently, because the present are evil days, days of the grossest ignorance, immorality, and profaneness.

5:17 What the will of the Lord is - In every time, place, and circumstance.

5:18 Wherein is excess - That is, which leads to debauchery of every kind. But be ye filled with the Spirit - In all his graces, who gives a more noble pleasure than wine can do.

5:19 Speaking to each other - By the Spirit. In the Psalms - Of David. And hymns - Of praise. And spiritual songs - On any divine subject. By there being no inspired songs, peculiarly adapted to the Christian dispensation, as there were to the Jewish, it is evident that the promise of the Holy Ghost to believers, in the last days, was by his larger effusion to supply the lack of it. Singing with your hearts - As well as your voice. To the Lord - Jesus, who searcheth the heart.

5:20 Giving thanks - At all times and places. And for all things - Prosperous or adverse, since al] work together for good.In the name of, or through, our Lord Jesus Christ - By whom we receive all good things.

John, Chapter 6,  verses 51-58

32 declareth himself to be the Bread of life to believers
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.
52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.
56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.
57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

6:51 If any eat of this bread - That is, believe in me: he shall live for ever - In other words, he that believeth to the end shall be saved. My flesh which I will give you - This whole discourse concerning his flesh and blood refers directly to his passion, and but remotely, if at all, to the Lord's Supper.

6:52 Observe the degrees: the Jews are tried here; the disciples, Joh 6:60-66, the apostles, Joh 6:67.

6:53 Unless ye eat the flesh of the Son of man - Spiritually: unless ye draw continual virtue from him by faith. Eating his flesh is only another expression for believing.

6:55 Meat - drink indeed - With which the soul of a believer is as truly fed, as his body with meat and drink.

6:57 I live by the Father - Being one with him. He shall live by me - Being one with me. Amazing union!

6:58 This is - That is, I am the bread - Which is not like the manna your fathers ate, who died notwithstanding.
