What does the Bible say about the Virgin Mary?

Biblical passages devoted to the Most Holy Mother of God divide rather clearly into three groups: direct references to the Virgin Mary in the Gospels, Acts, and the Epistles; prophecies about the Virgin who was to become the Mother of Christ; and biblical types that symbolically speak about the Mother of God and her participation in the work of our salvation.

Direct references to the Most Holy Mother of God in the New Testament are few. Even so, they speak of the Virgin Mary's presence and participation throughout the whole Gospel story. Matthew and Luke speak about the Mother of God in greater detail, including in their narratives the testimony about the Nativity of the Lord Jesus Christ and the events that preceded it. Matthew writes about the message given to Joseph, while Luke writes about the Annunciation to the Most Holy Mother of God herself: that the Virgin Mary would conceive in her womb by the Holy Spirit and give birth to the Messiah promised by God. Matthew supplements his account of the Nativity with the adoration of the Magi and the flight into Egypt, while Luke includes the Virgin Mary's visit to Elizabeth, the Circumcision, the Presentation, and the finding of the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Jerusalem Temple. The Song of the Most Holy Mother of God quoted by Luke has special importance. Its words, "for behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed," have been understood by Christians from the most ancient times as a biblical basis for the special veneration of the Virgin Mary. Luke also gives the words of Simeon the God-receiver, "and a sword will pierce through your own soul also," which are traditionally regarded as an indication of the Mother of God's special role in Christ's saving work.

During the years of Christ's public ministry, we see the Most Holy Mother of God taking part in events only from time to time, as at Cana of Galilee. Still, the evangelists mention one meeting, or perhaps several meetings, of the Mother of Christ with him and his disciples. In particular, the three writers of the so-called Synoptic Gospels give the account of the Virgin Mary coming with Christ's brothers to the house where he was with the disciples and many others. Scholars disagree about whether these were Joseph's children from a first marriage or Christ's cousins. In any case, it is clear that they cannot be understood as his full brothers. The importance of this moment lies especially in the fact that Christ tells the disciples that everyone who does the will of the Father, as the Virgin Mary does, becomes as close to Jesus as true relatives. Luke also includes testimony that veneration of Christ, even during his earthly life, was expressed in special respect for the one who bore him.

Finally, John testifies that the Virgin Mary witnessed the Crucifixion, and that from the Cross Christ entrusted her to his beloved disciple, since in those days a woman alone, without a husband or sons, was deprived of every social status and protection. At the same time, the Lord speaks of the beloved disciple's adoption by the Virgin Mary. Christians have traditionally interpreted this as the adoption of the whole Church by her in the person of the evangelist.

After the Resurrection and Ascension of the Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke's testimony in Acts, the Virgin Mary remained with the apostles at the center of the Jerusalem community.

Prophecies about the Virgin Mary in the Old Testament are even rarer. They are all united by one theme: the virginal conception of the Lord Jesus Christ. In Gen. 3:15, God, addressing the serpent, speaks about the Descendant of the woman who will one day strike the serpent. At the same time, the sacred writer uses a somewhat unusual expression by calling the Descendant of the woman her seed. This has traditionally been interpreted as a prophecy of Christ's extraordinary birth as the Descendant of the Woman. Further, in Ps. 132, speaking of God's promise to David, the psalmist speaks about the Son of David who will be the fruit of David's womb. Traditionally, this is understood as a prophecy about the Virgin from the line of David. Finally, Isaiah of Jerusalem speaks of the birth of the Messiah from a Virgin, using a word that can be translated both as "virgin" and as "young woman." However, from the 3rd to 2nd centuries BC, judging by the authoritative Greek translation of the LXX, this word was understood specifically as "virgin."

Symbols and types of the Most Holy Mother of God in the Bible are numerous and varied. Most of them were already regarded this way in the era of the undivided Church. As a rule, these interpretations are still shared by Orthodox and Catholic Christians. It is impossible to list all the symbols and types of the Virgin Mary that appear in abundance both in theological literature and especially in Christian liturgical and prayer poetry. We give only a few of the best known and most characteristic.

Thus, Jacob's Ladder is considered a symbolic type of the Mother of God, because in the Virgin Mary heaven, where God dwells, and earth are joined. From ancient times, the Burning Bush has been a visible symbol of the mystery of the Incarnation of the Son of God in the womb of the Virgin Mary. As the presence of the uncontainable God in earthly reality, the Ark of the Covenant is a type of the Mother of God. Christians also regard the vessel with manna as a symbol of the Mother of God, since the Virgin Mary carried Christ, the Bread of Life, in her womb. The incomprehensible presence of God in Mary's womb is reflected in such symbols as the tent of meeting and Gideon's fleece, moistened by God's grace. The words of Ps. 44 about the queen standing beside the Messiah are also traditionally applied to the Virgin Mary.

In the prophetic books there are also several striking types of the Virgin Mary. In particular, Christians understand in this way the words of Ezekiel's prophecy about the closed gate through which only God passes. Mount Paran is also customarily regarded as a symbol of the Mother of God, as is the mountain in Dan. 2:34ff. from which, without human action, a stone is cut out that destroys the statues.

Christians also apply to the Mother of God the words about the house that Divine Wisdom built for herself, as well as Zephaniah's prophecy about the daughter of Zion.

Finally, one accepted interpretation of the words of the Revelation of John the Theologian about the woman clothed with the sun applies these words to the Virgin Mary.

45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
John   ch.  2,  verse 1-5
1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

Exodus   ch.  3,  verse 2
2 And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
Exodus   ch.  25,  verse 10-16
10 And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.
11 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make upon it a crown of gold round about.
12 And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put them in the four corners thereof; and two rings shall be in the one side of it, and two rings in the other side of it.
13 And thou shalt make staves of shittim wood, and overlay them with gold.
14 And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them.

Exodus   ch.  16,  verse 32

Judges   ch.  6,  verse 36-40
36 And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,
37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
38 And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.
39 And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.
40 And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.
1 Kings   ch.  8,  verse 10-11
10 And it came to pass, when the priests were come out of the holy place, that the cloud filled the house of the LORD,
11 So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD.

1 Then he brought me back the way of the gate of the outward sanctuary which looketh toward the east; and it was shut.
2 Then said the LORD unto me; This gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter in by it; because the LORD, the God of Israel, hath entered in by it, therefore it shall be shut.
Habakkuk   ch.  3,  verse 2-3
2 O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy.
3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise.

Daniel   ch.  2,  verse 34
34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.
Daniel   ch.  2,  verse 45
45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.
