These are the words of an unbelieving Roman official reporting on what is happening. This is how he perceives the situation connected with the arrest of the apostle Paul. And this is very typical of a functionary: amazing events are taking place beside him; if he took them seriously, his whole idea of life could change. But he does not trouble himself to look into them; he has more important tasks: to report well to his superiors, to "save face" before his subordinates, and thereby to display his competence and indispensability. Of course, every person "of this world" has the right to such a position, but the task of Christians is to press through with the gospel even to such people, to press through by bearing witness to the resurrection of Christ in word and life, because this is precisely what the Lord commanded His Church.
