Jesus is truly "meek and lowly in heart" (Matt 11:29). It is not very easy for us to understand what meekness is. Someone once noted with striking accuracy: "Meekness is the tenderness of the strong." This quality does not belong to someone who is weak, but to someone who is truly strong: Jesus is not weak; He is utterly strong, but He does not use that strength - He reveals love. The apostle Paul wrote about this in the Letter to the Philippians (Phil 2:6-8).

We constantly encounter evil in this life - both what is objectively evil and what only appears so to us. And we constantly want to "resist," to set an answering force against this evil force, so that the force of opposition is no less than the force of the attack. But both foremost apostles unanimously set Christ Himself before us as an example, calling us not to answer evil with evil, not to oppose force with force, but to overcome evil with good, with real love - not for evil, of course, but for people who have fallen under its power.

Without question, this is beyond our own strength; it is natural for us to react to pain inflicted on us. That is why the apostles so often speak of the need to put on Christ, the full armor of God, so that in a critical situation it is not I who act, but Christ, in whom I abide.
