32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

The joining of two Old Testament commandments into one shows that they are one and the same. It is impossible to love God and not love those whom He loves, people (see 1 John 4:20). It is impossible to love a person without being united in love with God, who is love (1 John 4:16). And Jesus, who revealed what love for people is by laying down "His life for His friends," also reveals what love for God is by doing everything that the Father commanded Him (John 14:31). To love as Christ loves is the fulfillment of the two-in-one commandment.
