NOTES for Mar 2:27-28

27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

The Sabbath commandment was given by God Himself in the Law of Moses; moreover, keeping it is declared to be the sign of the covenant God made with His people. Can a person, since the phrase "son of man" without capital letters, which do not exist in speech, simply means "human being", be called lord over such an important commandment of God? Yet Jesus does exactly that. When is this possible? Not when the commandment is ignored, but when it is surpassed. The meaning of this commandment is that a person should devote one day out of seven to the works of God; it is a kind of tithe offered to God, not in money or produce, but in time. Then it is clear that a person becomes not the slave of this commandment, but its lord, when he gives God more than one seventh of his life. For example, like the Son of Man, the whole life. Again we see that for Jesus it is clear that service to God is not calendrical but constant. He is free from bondage to this commandment because each of His days is a Sabbath, a day given to God.
