NOTES for Dan 2:1-49
The king's dream closely resembles an illustrative model of how every earthly state is built, whatever its foundation. However golden its head may be, whatever may have happened in the past, whatever it may possess and however proud it may be, every empire and every social order still faces birth, flourishing, old age, sickness, and death. Showing us the same thing through the example of the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple (Lk 21:5-11), which was seemingly built and adorned to serve God, the Lord once again brings us back to the truth that outward appearances do not matter to Him. Whatever words are used to conceal emptiness and falsehood, however evil and self-interest are explained as service to God, everything will still turn to dust when it strikes the cornerstone: the risen Jesus.
