NOTES for Php 4:19-20
What does the apostle Paul pray for? For the fulfilment of every desire of the Philippians to whom he writes? No, he puts it somewhat differently. He says: “My God will supply every need of yours.” What does it mean to supply a need? To begin with, it does not mean fulfilling desires. He is speaking about needs. Does it mean, then, that He will satisfy every need and give everything required? Not exactly. Rather, it seems that He gives something more important than the mere satisfaction of “needs.” To some extent He makes up with grace for what is lacking among the necessities—giving, for example, the strength to endure a difficult situation without removing the difficulties themselves.
