NOTES for Heb 1:1-6

With these words the apostle affirms the unity of all the divine revelation handed down to us in Holy Scripture—the unity of the Old and New Covenants. The same God spoke to people through the ancient prophets of the Old Covenant and through Jesus Christ; the same Word was first offered to be heard and then came in the flesh. The same Son participates in the creation of the universe “before all ages,” is incarnate through the Virgin Mary for our redemption and union with God “under Pontius Pilate,” and brings about the final Transfiguration of the world for the life “of the age to come.” This awareness of the divine presence throughout all human history, and therefore in the life of every person, is an integral part of the Christian faith. It is also important that this presence is neither silent nor indifferent. God speaks, and therefore reveals His love and His will to people; this means that our attempts to commune with Him, our prayers, are never fruitless, even when it seems to us that we do not hear Him. His Word comes to us through Holy Scripture, through the Church's experience of prayer and sacrament, and through the “inexpressible groanings” of the Holy Spirit in our hearts—it comes and bears fruit: our growth in love for Him and for one another.
