NOTES for Mar 12:35-36

This line that Jesus takes from a psalm seems obscure and incomprehensible. Apparently, in Gospel times as today, it raised just as many questions. Perhaps this is why the Lord quotes it, wishing to put an end to the Pharisees’ arguments and provocative questions. They simply could have no answer to this question except embarrassed silence.

The answer, as so often happens, is hidden in God Himself, for it is of Him that the psalmist speaks. The Pharisees could not know about Jesus’ twofold nature. To understand this, they would have had to truly encounter Him instead of merely posing scholastic riddles. Then it would have been revealed to them that Christ was fully Man, a descendant of David, and at the same time God, the true Lord of the glorified king.
