10 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. |
11 And many nations shall be joined to the LORD in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto thee. |
12 And the LORD shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again. |
13 Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation. |
"Let all flesh be silent before the Lord"... On the whole, comment is unnecessary. We can and should speak about God. Preaching is a wonderful thing. We can and should speak with Him. Verbal prayer is beautiful and important. But sometimes we must stop and fall silent, simply remaining wordlessly in His presence...
10 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. |
What makes the people of God to be people of God? Special qualities? Hardly: the Jewish people in this respect are similar to all the others. It has certainly its own national identity, easy to recognize always and everywhere; but which people does not have it? Then maybe a special fate? In a sense, yes: not every people can boast of such reversals in their history. But it is all the same a human affair: you never can tell of which new developments can emit the history, when it is about four millenniums. And here is, God's presence among His people is God's affair, it does not depend on people and on history. Although of course this independence is relative: because the preservation and the protection of God's presence is in particular a human task, entrusted to the people of God, who was called to witness about God dwelling in the midst of them. Then it is also true the fact that the people of God remains such only as long as there is a place for God in the midst of them.
It is not accidentally that the Torah and the prophets speak not about the ownership by the people of the land that God gave to them, but rather of the use of this land, which is limited by the conditions of the union-covenant concluded with God. If the union turns out violated, it can completely form a situation, where people lose their land, and the Temple. But this can be possible only in one case: if God goes away, and leaves the land, the city and the Temple, which He once blessed and hallowed by His presence.
After that, the destruction of the city and the Temple, the devastation of the land become only an external expression of this new spiritual state, a kind of anti-testimony, the proof of the fact that, at least in this historic given stage the people has failed their spiritual task. But here is, the return of the people on the land of their fathers, the restoration of the city and the Temple means exactly that after the repentance and the new conversion, the people are ready again for the mission which is entrusted to them by God. And thus, also begin a new stage in its historic fate. Stage leading them directly to the door of the New Testament.
10 Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. |
What makes the people of God the people of God? Special qualities? Hardly: in this respect the Jewish people are like all others. Of course, they have their own national face, always and everywhere easily recognizable; but what people does not? Then perhaps a special destiny? In a certain sense, yes: not every people can boast of such sharp turns in its history.
But all this is still a human matter. Who knows what twists history can produce when four millennia are involved. The presence of God among His people, however, is God's matter; it does not depend on people or on history. Though, of course, this independence is relative: preserving and guarding the presence of God is precisely a human task, entrusted to the people of God, who were called to bear witness to God dwelling among them. But then it is also true that the people of God remain such only as long as there is a place for God among them.
It is no accident that both the Torah and the prophets speak not so much of the people's ownership of the land God gave them as of their use of it, a use limited by the conditions of the covenant-union made with God. If the union is broken, a situation may quite well arise in which the people lose both their land and the Temple. But such a thing can become possible only in one case: if God leaves, if He abandons the land, the city, and the Temple that He once blessed and sanctified by His presence.
After that, the destruction of the city and the Temple and the desolation of the land become only the outward expression of this new spiritual condition, a kind of anti-witness, proof that, at least at this historical stage, the people did not manage to fulfill its spiritual task. But the return of the people to the land of their fathers, the restoration of the city and the Temple, mean precisely that, after repentance and a new turning, the people are again ready for the mission God has entrusted to them. And that means that a new stage begins in their historical destiny: a stage that leads them straight to the threshold of the New Covenant.
13 Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation. |
What the prophet Zechariah is talking about here? God chose for Himself a holy habitation - the temple of Jerusalem. There, in the very inside of the place, "Holy of Holies", where is kept the holiness of the Old Testament, the hidden presence of God. Such was the case, before the cup of the sins of Israel got overfilled. God then left His temple; Jerusalem was destroyed, Israeli people taken to the Babylonian captivity.
But here is, the prophet sees a new picture. God returns, He visits again His habitation and calls His people. And there are no human strengths capable of resisting His will for the salvation of Israel and their return on His land. But there is another sense in these words. God will come into this world and will settle down in the middle of His people and will open His face - and what can then say man before God's face? Questions, complaints, justifications - everything will turn out worthless. Only meeting face to face will have an importance.
1 I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand. |
2 Then said I, Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof. |
3 And, behold, the angel that talked with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him, |
4 And said unto him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein: |
5 For I, saith the LORD, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her. |
6 Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the LORD: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the LORD. |
7 Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon. |
8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye. |
9 For, behold, I will shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me. |
1 And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. |
2 And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? |
3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. |
4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. |
5 And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by. |
6 And the angel of the LORD protested unto Joshua, saying, |
7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by. |
8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH. |
9 For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day. |
10 In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree. |
Here the prophecy calls Zion not the mountain on which Jerusalem stands, but its inhabitants who are far away from it. If so, does this not imply that it speaks not only of the particular city of Jerusalem, and not even only of those inhabitants of Judea who remain faithful to the Lord during the Babylonian exile, but of all who belong to the people of God, wherever they may be? For the faithful, the Lord will become an unbreakable wall in every place. Here we remember the Heavenly Jerusalem spoken of in John’s Revelation, the city that many of the saved will enter from every corner of the earth.
The cleansing of the priest’s garments means that the cleansing of the whole people and their return to God begins with the cleansing of the priests and their return to the path of unstained ministry. But the return only begins there, for not only priests but all of us are called, each in our own way, to serve the Lord and fulfill His will.
