21 Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.
22 So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.
23 Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.

The shock is so great that at the beginning of the psalm there sounds the question: why have we been rejected forever? It does not even occur to anyone that what happened may turn out to be a temporary trial. This is understandable, for the wicked have ruined and defiled all the holy places, all the places of sacred assemblies; there is no one to turn to for a word of wisdom, no prophecies are heard. Could even the most farsighted prophets have seen that this picture would not only be repeated more than once through the centuries, but also multiplied?
Yet even in the bitterest times the faithful continue to cry out to the Lord, keeping faith with Him and remembering the covenant with Him. They believe: the Lord will come to help, He has not turned away, and precisely for this reason one can turn to Him.
