NOTES for Joh 2:1-11

The miracle in which the Lord Jesus Christ changed water into wine at the wedding in Cana of Galilee is perceived by Christians first of all as a many-sided symbol that reveals several aspects of our spiritual life at once. First of all, of course, it is a symbol of the Eucharist, in which the Lord transforms the “empty” water of our life into the life-filled wine of the Kingdom of Heaven. Moreover, from deep antiquity this miracle became a sign of God’s special blessing upon marriage, and this passage is read during the celebration of the sacrament of marriage.

Perhaps among the most striking and significant words in this passage are those spoken by the Most Holy Mother of God to the servants—people just like us. Pointing to Jesus, She says, “Do whatever He tells you.” The miracle about which we read today takes place at the request of the Most Holy Virgin. Our participation in this miracle, in all its symbolic aspects, is possible precisely as obedience to this call of the Most Holy Virgin. Whenever we need something, material or spiritual, She always calls us to obey the commands of Her Son. This is why we honor Her so deeply, love Her, and rely on Her.
