NOTES for Mat 25:14-30
In the Christian community in which the Gospel was written, just as among Christ’s followers today, the same question arose: “What should we do?” In one way or another, we have all found ourselves in the position of servants whose Master is traveling: we must decide what to do in His absence. Here we encounter this parable, told by Jesus to His disciples in Jerusalem. He is already preparing them for the time when they will live in expectation of their final meeting with Him. The answer to the eternal question is given in an unusual form: “Do not be afraid! Act! Think! Take risks!” Of all human occupations, commerce is the most suitable image for the conduct of faithful disciples. But instead of money, the disciples received something else from Christ: the presence of the Spirit, the gifts of hope and love. Now it is up to them, that is, to us, to trade and increase them so that this world may grow ever richer in love.
