NOTES for Mat 6:19-23

“If the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!” the Lord tells us today. How can this be—how can light be darkness? Here is one possible interpretation: it concerns what serves as light for us, what we choose as our light. If we regard a cozy twilight, or even darkness, as light, then what is darkness? If we do not come out into the light of Christ’s commandments but prefer the local illumination of selected rules, what chance do we have of seeing anything beyond the end of our nose? What is light for us? The light of Christ, which enlightens everyone and everything, or something else?
