NOTES for Ki1 19:11-16
What does God's voice sound like? Surely He can speak a word that will split the heavens open and bring the mountains crashing down. Yet for some reason He does not like to speak that way. A voice from heaven is an exceedingly rare occurrence, and a voice that everyone present both hears and understands word for word is rarer still... He chooses another way: He speaks in a gentle breeze. Why? You know, in school there are teachers who shout loudly but whom no one listens to, and there are those who speak very quietly, almost in a whisper, yet everyone hears every word because they listen attentively. God does not want to shout over us! Of course, everyone will hear a loud cry, but He needs to be heard by the person for whom His voice truly matters. He waits until everything within us grows still, and then, in complete silence, we will hear His voice.
