Perhaps our first reaction to the evil around us is resentment and grumbling against God because He is unfair. Another person's evil is so obvious to us that we forget to think about our own blackness and about what would happen if God showed His justice toward us. How wonderful and how saving it is for us that God is not fair in that strict sense, that He does not deprive us of His love, us who do not know how and do not want to love, and that He continues His communion with us, who sincerely know only how to ask and can speak with enthusiasm only about ourselves.
