NOTES for Ti1 6:1-10

Today’s entire passage from the epistle to Timothy seems to unfold from the sixth verse: be godly and content. It would seem to be simple advice, confirmed by the recommendations of a succession of doctors, yet how difficult it is to put into practice. Contentment is so rare that meeting someone who is truly content with his life and with what he has is a rare and happy occurrence. Food, clothing, a roof over one’s head, one’s own health and that of loved ones, and the ability to work—that is all we need, Paul tells us. What is there to be discontented with when all this is present?
