NOTES for Isa 3:1-4:1

1 For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water,
2 The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient,
3 The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counseller, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.
4 And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.
5 And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.
6 When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:
7 In that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people.
8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.
9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.
10 Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.
11 Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.
12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.
13 The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people.
14 The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses.
15 What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the LORD GOD of hosts.
16 Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet:
17 Therefore the LORD will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts.
18 In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon,
19 The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers,
20 The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings,
21 The rings, and nose jewels,
22 The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins,
23 The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails.
24 And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.
25 Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.
26 And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground.
1 And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.

The Day of the Lord is the day of God's judgment on His people, and woe to those who commit lawlessness! Terrible is the state of a society when people choose as their leader someone distinguished by his clothing, when insolent people take charge, when women seek marriage on any terms. But this is where the logic of sin leads, producing the kind of fruit for which the whole tree is cut down.

In today's reading the prophet Isaiah says things that are very important for us today about what happens to a society that is not guided by God's truth. He paints a picture of complete impoverishment and shrinking, and the details of this picture are, alas, all too recognizable. The prophet speaks of a society in which there is no just judge, no wise leader, and no prophet proclaiming the Truth. Not even a decent leader for the smallest group can be found. The artist's voice falls silent, and ideas of true beauty are lost. Then, the prophet says, people grab any decently dressed person and give him authority, while he swears that he cannot heal the wounds of society...

So Jerusalem collapsed and Judah fell. So a society collapses where God's truth has been forgotten. The prophet speaks of a people who are no longer even ashamed of their sin and their unfaithfulness to God, and who bring evil upon themselves. The prophet says that the leaders have corrupted the paths of the people. This is very understandable to us, because we are used to blaming leaders for all the sins and wounds of society. But the prophet has just said that this society, unashamed of sin, itself chooses anyone at all as its leaders. So that we may understand quite clearly what is being discussed, the prophet speaks to the leaders of God's people: "the spoil of the poor is in your houses."

We may not have the strength to correct what is happening to us. But at the very least, it is important for us to hear what the prophet says about us, so that we may clearly understand why we remain in such a deplorable state and know what to pray about and what to repent of.

Here we encounter a rethinking of Adam's feelings after he learned his nakedness and was driven out of paradise. These feelings will return to us in the last days of the world. Everyone will remember his own exile. Adam could have taken the path of repentance, but it is not known whether he could stop knowing what he had understood after tasting the fruit.

We have a chance not to live in the memory of our fall, but to follow Christ toward salvation. Toward the forgiveness of sins and of the fall as such. We will need all our will and all our ability to love and be faithful to Christ, even in part, yet constantly wanting to learn more. Never stopping.

Falling and becoming distracted, striving for pleasures and rest, we must still strive to accept Adam in ourselves. To fall on our knees before the Lord and ask Him to grant us forgiveness and forgetfulness of our knowledge of good and evil.
