NOTES for Luk 1:39-45

39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

Just as the child leaped in Elizabeth's womb, everything within us rejoices at the thought of Mary, the Mother of our Lord. The feast of her Dormition is one of the brightest feasts, without a shadow of sorrow. It is an example of how a person dies yet does not leave the world, becoming its shield of prayer and remaining in a bond of prayer with the living. For Mary is always with us when we pray to her.

There is a legend that before the death of the Mother of God, before her Dormition, the angel Gabriel appeared to her just as he had in the days of the Annunciation and brought white, fragrant flowers, flowers that recalled the radiance of heaven and eternal life. It may be only a legend, but in it the human spirit speaks with all its love for Mary's holiness, purity, her whole image, and for Mary herself.
