NOTES for Jer 33:1-26

1 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
2 Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name;
3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
4 For thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword;
5 They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my fury, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city.
6 Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.
7 And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.
8 And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.
9 And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.
10 Thus saith the LORD; Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye say shall be desolate without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast,
11 The voice of joy, and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom, and the voice of the bride, the voice of them that shall say, Praise the LORD of hosts: for the LORD is good; for his mercy endureth for ever: and of them that shall bring the sacrifice of praise into the house of the LORD. For I will cause to return the captivity of the land, as at the first, saith the LORD.
12 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Again in this place, which is desolate without man and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, shall be an habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down.
13 In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the vale, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks pass again under the hands of him that telleth them, saith the LORD.
14 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will perform that good thing which I have promised unto the house of Israel and to the house of Judah.
15 In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land.
16 In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness.
17 For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel;
18 Neither shall the priests the Levites want a man before me to offer burnt offerings, and to kindle meat offerings, and to do sacrifice continually.
19 And the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, saying,
20 Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
21 Then may also my covenant be broken with David my servant, that he should not have a son to reign upon his throne; and with the Levites the priests, my ministers.
22 As the host of heaven cannot be numbered, neither the sand of the sea measured: so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites that minister unto me.
23 Moreover the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying,
24 Considerest thou not what this people have spoken, saying, The two families which the LORD hath chosen, he hath even cast them off? thus they have despised my people, that they should be no more a nation before them.
25 Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth;
26 Then will I cast away the seed of Jacob, and David my servant, so that I will not take any of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: for I will cause their captivity to return, and have mercy on them.

Today the prophet speaks about something that is usually very hard for us to understand: God's faithfulness to us. We are always inclined to perceive God as anything at all except a loving Father. And if we do speak about His faithfulness, we understand by it either His readiness to punish any disobedience, or, on the contrary, a pretext for our permissiveness.

In this same chapter, on the streets of deserted Jerusalem, on the eve of the city's capture, Jeremiah recognizes His faithfulness as the irrevocability of His love, the irrevocability of His promises to people. For many of Jeremiah's contemporaries, God's faithfulness meant that God would preserve Jerusalem in any case for the sake of the Temple; but the prophet sees something else: the Lord will preserve the remnant of the people not for the sake of the Temple, but for the sake of His love, for the sake of the promise given to David.

City houses are being destroyed by those who came to fight the enemies. Is this not an image of how often human efforts lead to results directly opposite to what was intended? Those who would like to protect actually ruin, because they are guided by limited human ideas. But the One who warned the people about the threat of destruction wants to save them from it. Just when the disasters He foretold begin to fall on sinners, He confirms that the hour will come when the good word He spoke about the people will be fulfilled.

Against the background of the promises of the people's future joyful life in unity with the Lord, revealed through prophecy, the promise to raise up a righteous Branch for the house of David stands out. It must have been hard for Jeremiah's contemporaries, and for Jeremiah himself, to imagine that this did not refer to an earthly king. But for a long time now there have been no kings on Israel's throne, nor do Levites offer sacrifices in the Jerusalem Temple; for almost two thousand years even the Temple itself has been gone.

But for those who believe that the word of the Lord is unshakable, historical circumstances do not cancel the deep fulfillment of the prophecy. For the reign of the only King, who made the chief sacrifice in the universe, cannot cease.

The people need a leader, a true one appointed by God. And so, in the days when Jerusalem and the entire Davidic dynasty were perishing, the prophet promises that God will preserve a “Branch,” a descendant of David who will lead the renewed kingdom. Historically, this will not happen: even after the exile, Judea will no longer be an independent kingdom, except for several years under the Maccabean dynasty.

But besides outward, “great” history, there is another history in which faith sees more deeply than ordinary knowledge. This prophecy will not be forgotten: it will become messianic, referring to the coming King, who will not only save Judea and lead it to God, but will become the Light of the world and the Hope of all nations.

More often than other prophets, Jeremiah speaks of something fairly obvious, though not fully understood by his contemporaries: every covenant ever made with God is made for ever. God cancels nothing and renounces nothing. He remains faithful to promises once given and covenants once made. This is understandable: God's plan can be fulfilled only in this way. God cannot make its fulfilment dependent on changeable human nature—and every covenant God has made and every promise he has given is part of his plan.

But it is not only a matter of God's plan as such. Above all, it is a matter of God himself. For all his plans are expressions of his will. His action in the world he created is inseparable from his own existence and from his awareness of his own being. He acts in the world—and indeed creates the world—not because he wanted to play some game on a cosmic scale, but because both the creation of the world and his every action within it are part of, and an expression of, his own life, which can only be what it is.

The world, of course, is neither identical with God nor an outflow from God; yet its very existence has meaning only in the context of God's life. And if this is true of everything from a grain of sand to a human being, it is all the more true of God's people, for whom he has special plans. This means that he will carry out his plan in any event. The only question is who among his people will realise the possibilities they have as members of his people, and how.

Human freedom, after all, has not been abolished. To be God's people is a calling to fulfil the possibility of actively participating in the fulfilment of God's design for the human person and for humanity. It is a possibility that must, however, be realised; it will not unfold of its own accord. Yet, regardless of the attitude of those to whom it is offered, it remains theirs until the end of time. This is why God's covenants and promises are unchanging: they are the very condition that makes this possibility available. But they provide no guarantees. The only guarantee is the ‘yes’ a person says to God in response to his call—a ‘yes’ that will have to be repeated again and again until the end of time.
