NOTES for Deu 7:11-12
11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee this day, to do them. |
12 Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers: |

To be master of one's own life is freedom. And real freedom implies freedom of religion as well. God allows all nations to "walk in their own ways"; Israel alone, under pain of death, must believe in the Lord. At first glance this is an obvious violation of freedom, and therefore of love. But one can look at it from another side. A thousand and a half years before Christ, God is in effect saying to His people: the one who asserts his own will and his own ideas about life and religion will find himself outside real, meaningful life, or outside life altogether, while the one who dedicates his life, his soul, to God will know truth and love.
