NOTES for Isa 1:19-31

19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
21 How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.
22 Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water:
23 Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.
24 Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:
25 And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin:
26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellers as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.
28 And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed.
29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.
30 For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.
31 And the strong shall be as tow, and the maker of it as a spark, and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them.

"The strong shall become tow, and his work a spark; and they shall both burn together, and no one shall quench them." Following the path after the Lord means following the path of humility and humiliation, of making oneself small before the whole world. In each of us there is a secret and heavy striving for perfection and victory. At times it is not even clear over what. And we multiply envy and quarrels, trying to find our own path before people.

We want to occupy a higher position, receive more pleasure, and so on. This is like constant hunger. And in trying to satisfy ourselves, to indulge our desires, we condemn ourselves to death. Death from endless exhaustion, from emptiness, and in the loneliness of the heart. And the more stubbornly we persist on our path toward victories and achievements for our own sake, the more God resists us, because He knows that our works are vain and useless if through our labor we are not seeking His presence in the world. If we are not seeking peace and are not softening our heart for His sake. "For out of Zion shall go forth the law." The law of eternal life and peace.

For Isa 2:3
And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

The way of the Lord, of which the prophet Isaiah speaks, differs strikingly from human ways. The Lord Himself proclaims this through Isaiah, saying: "My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord" (Isa. 55:8). This qualitative difference is expressed above all in the fact that human ways do not lead into life; only the Lord, who is Life itself, can lead us to Himself.

And now we read at the beginning of the book of Isaiah that God does not abandon people, but that a day will come when He will teach all nations His ways. That means it is attainable, no matter how hard we try to prove the opposite. And it means that God's will is for us to find the way of life. It is also important that this prophecy was fulfilled in the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

People have reflected on communion with God and on what is needed for it in every age, even when they remembered God poorly and remembered poorly what He wants from them. With Abraham's calling a new era began: God Himself spoke to people, and not only spoke, but also began to create His people, raising it from a small tribe. Now, it would appear, there could be no questions concerning communion with God: God Himself could answer any question and resolve any uncertainty; one only had to ask Him. But people tend to cling to traditional paradigms, whether in behavior or in thinking.

Sacrifices had long been regarded as a form of communion with higher powers, as a shared meal of gods and people. But fallen man has always tended to seek convenience and emotional comfort more than spiritual renewal. Communion with higher powers created obligations; their nearness at times began to feel burdensome. Sacrifices ceased to be communion with higher powers and turned into a treat by which people tried to appease those powers so that they would leave in peace those who prepared the treat for them. The history of Yahwism began from a clean slate, but fallen man, even when receiving revelation from God, remains fallen man. And in Yahwism too, especially when it spread widely and became, as it was in the time of Isaiah of Jerusalem, the state religion, sacrifice, which in the days of Abraham and Moses had been a shared meal of God and people, also became a means that allowed religious but not very believing people to buy God off.

The logic was simple: keeping the commandments is difficult and often inconvenient, while it is easy to organize a splendid festival with many sacrifices so that God will be satisfied. Will a multitude of sacrifices replace keeping the commandments? Through the mouth of His prophet God answers: no, it will not. Stop doing evil, learn to do good, and then come to Me, He says to those who hoped that sacrifices could replace the path of righteousness.

And the point here is not even that God is repelled by violators of the commandments, though their choice can hardly please Him. The point is that the sacrificial meal has meaning only as a form of communion with God. That communion with God is impossible without keeping the commandments. And the arithmetic of offense and ransom, violation and penalties that remove guilt from the violator, is out of place here. God offers man only one choice. Nothing else can replace it.

For Isa 1:1-31
The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.
Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.
From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.
And the daughter of Zion is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.
Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.
10 Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.
11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
12 When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?
13 Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
14 Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

This is the beginning of the book of the prophet Isaiah. Here the task of every prophecy becomes very clear: in a situation where people are losing all spiritual and moral bearings, God through His prophets restores the true understanding of righteousness.

So, first: wash yourselves, make yourselves clean. To do this we must agree that we are unclean, acknowledge our failure and sinfulness. And then we must stop doing evil, remove evil deeds "from before God's eyes," that is, remove them from life altogether, because God sees everything. And after that we must do good, while the criterion of this good's authenticity is selflessness. To save a slave, to defend an orphan and a widow, means doing something good for the weakest, poorest, and most powerless people in that world, those from whom one could expect no reward for a good deed. Selflessness is a sign of mercy and sacrificial love, so dear to God's heart.

Of course, by itself this prophetic call does not give a person the strength to live according to these guidelines. It only awakens the desire for such a life, while the possibility of the fullness of righteousness is opened in the New Testament with Christ.

Isaiah utters terrifying words. Through our lawlessness we have deprived ourselves of the possibility of God's constant presence. We try to observe rules—the rules of fasting and prayer—and offer sacrifice, but we do not fulfill the law. If it were not for the Salvation to come, we would be wiped from the face of the earth. It is important to fulfill the law constantly and actively. The one who fulfills the law will receive his reward. But the one who follows the Lord and performs deeds according to the word of the Lord fulfills His will. No sacrifices are required from him. What is needed is love, which will allow God once again to commune with His children, to receive us once again into His home. To meet us again like the prodigal son and arrange a feast, to slaughter the “young goat” in our honor and bestow His love upon us. He created the whole world, and we try to offer Him part of His own world as a sacrifice. We take what does not belong to us and give it instead of ourselves. Yet all that is required is to give ourselves—such as He has already made us, but to whom He has given freedom. And in this freedom we have the opportunity to take the difficult path, but the path of the Lord's works.

The texts for the first Sunday of Advent call us first of all to watchfulness. Not only because we cannot determine the moment when a child will be born. But also because our expectation of seeing Jesus now must be like what parents feel when they have already been waiting eight months for the birth of a child. There is no patience left at all: when at last will we be able to see, to know who this is, what He is like? Life is about to change at any minute, and there are too many of those minutes.

The changes in our life that Jesus gives us are immeasurably greater. He will come to us as a newborn infant, who cannot speak and who will not get anywhere unless we carry Him. In the time left to us before His birth, we must accustom ourselves to the thought that, like any little child, Jesus means cares, constant anxieties, and watchfulness at any time of day or night.

Is He well with us? Is He warm? Will we teach Him to smile? And will we unlearn how to wage war when He appears in our life?

In today’s reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah, the Lord tells us three important things that express all our hope. First, He promises to cleanse His people. This is our only hope, because in the final analysis a person is unable to purify his own heart. Of course, purification is also impossible without the person’s own desire and effort. Repentance and fasting can become the point of support through which God fills our desire for purification with strength.

Second, the Lord once again speaks of what He expects from people. “Zion shall be redeemed with justice, and her converts with righteousness.” In this way, God shows us the path of purification and reveals His will for us in a few words.

Third, today’s reading contains Isaiah’s first messianic prophecy, which corresponds almost word for word to the words of his contemporary, the prophet Micah: “Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established on the top of the mountains.” Repentance and purification, righteousness and hope—everything for us is centered on Christ.

O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.
Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob, because they be replenished from the east, and are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the children of strangers.
Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures; their land is also full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots:
Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made:
And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not.
10 Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty.
11 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:
13 And upon all the cedars of Lebanon, that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan,
14 And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up,
15 And upon every high tower, and upon every fenced wall,
16 And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures.
17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.
18 And the idols he shall utterly abolish.
19 And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
20 In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats;
21 To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth.
22 Cease ye from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for wherein is he to be accounted of?
