36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!
37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

Perhaps the key words in the Gospel according to John are "encounter" and "disciples." Almost all the situations the evangelist describes are situations in which Jesus encounters different people who then become His disciples. What is an encounter? The Teacher saw each of us even before we learned about Him, but one last step, which is also the first, remains for us: to come to His home, to find out where He lives, and then to tell those we love about Him. Then we too will become "witnesses" of what we have seen and heard, witnesses of His coming into the world from the Father. Then He will become for us the ladder by which the world above and our world communicate.
