NOTES for Лев 25:1-24
The words of the Lord from Leviticus about ownership of land sound especially relevant today: "The land shall not be sold forever, for the land is Mine." This could be taken as a manifestation of God's will in this dispute, if the question did not lie on a somewhat different plane. In our laws, the point is not that the land belongs to God. He does not figure at all as a subject of civil law. According to our ideas, land can belong either to the state or to private persons, and identifying the state with God is certainly no good thing.
This concerns not only legal questions. In general we are inclined to forget that everything belongs to God, even if we believe in Him. Absorbed in earthly cares, we lose sight of the fact that trade and monetary relations are only an imperfect means of ordering responsibility for the material world, which we use solely as God's "tenants." Neither money, nor food, nor means of production, none of what we possess belongs to us forever. The earth with its riches can only be the object of our care, and only then, through it, will God be able to feed, clothe, and warm each of us.
