1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
2 And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
3 And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
5 Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
6 And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the LORD.
7 So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
8 Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord GOD; this is the day whereof I have spoken.
9 And they that dwell in the cities of Israel shall go forth, and shall set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and the bucklers, the bows and the arrows, and the handstaves, and the spears, and they shall burn them with fire seven years:
10 So that they shall take no wood out of the field, neither cut down any out of the forests; for they shall burn the weapons with fire: and they shall spoil those that spoiled them, and rob those that robbed them, saith the Lord GOD.
11 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will give unto Gog a place there of graves in Israel, the valley of the passengers on the east of the sea: and it shall stop the noses of the passengers: and there shall they bury Gog and all his multitude: and they shall call it The valley of Hamon-gog.
12 And seven months shall the house of Israel be burying of them, that they may cleanse the land.
13 Yea, all the people of the land shall bury them; and it shall be to them a renown the day that I shall be glorified, saith the Lord GOD.
14 And they shall sever out men of continual employment, passing through the land to bury with the passengers those that remain upon the face of the earth, to cleanse it: after the end of seven months shall they search.
15 And the passengers that pass through the land, when any seeth a man's bone, then shall he set up a sign by it, till the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamon-gog.
16 And also the name of the city shall be Hamonah. Thus shall they cleanse the land.
17 And, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD; Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, Assemble yourselves, and come; gather yourselves on every side to my sacrifice that I do sacrifice for you, even a great sacrifice upon the mountains of Israel, that ye may eat flesh, and drink blood.
18 Ye shall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Bashan.
19 And ye shall eat fat till ye be full, and drink blood till ye be drunken, of my sacrifice which I have sacrificed for you.
20 Thus ye shall be filled at my table with horses and chariots, with mighty men, and with all men of war, saith the Lord GOD.
21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward.
23 And the heathen shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trespassed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them into the hand of their enemies: so fell they all by the sword.
24 According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions have I done unto them, and hid my face from them.
25 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Now will I bring again the captivity of Jacob, and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel, and will be jealous for my holy name;
26 After that they have borne their shame, and all their trespasses whereby they have trespassed against me, when they dwelt safely in their land, and none made them afraid.
27 When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies' lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations;
28 Then shall they know that I am the LORD their God, which cause them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there.
29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

At first sight, today's passage once again reflects a blending of two different perspectives: the strictly historical one, connected with the age of Cyrus the Great and the end of the Babylonian exile, and the messianic one, which already reaches beyond history. In the events described here it is not hard to see the first flashes of the coming great battles of Cyrus and his army, whose victories not only brought glory to their commander but also made his empire the most powerful state in the Middle East of its day.

Yet it is equally easy to discern echoes of events from quite a different age, connected with the military campaigns into Judah by the armies of another great empire, Assyria. It was then, in the days of King Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah of Jerusalem, that the soldiers of an Assyrian expeditionary force met their death at the walls of Jerusalem. Sennacherib had sent them to conquer Egypt, and on the way they lingered in Judah in order to capture Jerusalem, whose ruler the Assyrians had long suspected of disloyalty and secret dealings with Egypt, their principal military and political adversary at the time. For contemporaries and for many later generations, those events became an example of how the God of Israel intervenes in events on the side of His people.

It is not surprising that for Ezekiel, too, they became a prefiguration of that last great war which, on the eve of the Day of Judgment, will become a trial for all the nations of the earth—all except the people of God. For they have already passed through their trial, the remnant has been formed, and God has restored it to the land of the fathers. For them the Judgment lies behind, and the Kingdom promised by the prophets has become a reality.

And the war that has engulfed humanity and become its trial and Judgment comes to a halt in the land of Judah, at the walls of the holy city. It stops just as another war stopped here nearly two centuries earlier, a war brought to a halt by God Himself. The chastening sword of God's judgment stops at the borders of the land belonging to His people. Humanity is saved from destruction on the day of Judgment—saved through the very people whose neighbors all believed that its history was over and its fate sealed. Thus human judgment retreats before God's judgment, and only because of that retreat does humanity receive a chance of salvation.

It will be a complete and final victory over evil, and of the day it is accomplished the prophet speaks in the person of the Lord: “I will make My holy name known.” These words immediately direct us to the final chapters of the Gospel of John, where in His High Priestly Prayer to the Heavenly Father the Lord Jesus says, “I have manifested Your name to the people,” and also, “Father, glorify Your name.” These two texts, the prophecy and its fulfillment, are most closely bound together, and the whole of chapter 39 of the prophet Ezekiel can be understood precisely in connection with the Last Supper and Christ's final discourse with His disciples. The apocalyptic picture of the battle corresponds not to the outward course of the events of Holy Week, but to their inward spiritual intensity. The defeat of Gog's hordes of which the prophet speaks is literally fulfilled when the Lord Jesus declares: “Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.”

After saying that all God's people will take part in burying the defeated forces of evil, the prophet declares God's will concerning a certain sacrificial feast, and the meaning of his words cannot fail to astonish. First of all, like the battle with evil, this feast is universal. All creation, including the birds of heaven and the beasts of the field, is invited to take part. This is not simply a Temple sacrifice in accordance with the ordinances of Moses and Solomon. All creation participates in it, and at this supper flesh and blood are eaten, although their consumption is categorically forbidden. Moreover, the Lord says of this sacrifice that He Himself will slaughter it for us, whereas the sacrifices of the Old Testament were, on the contrary, slaughtered by human beings for God. It follows that this is something exceptional: not one sacrifice among many, but a unique and only Sacrifice.

Its details are hidden from the prophet's sight. This is not surprising, because the Incarnation of the Son of God is an event too incredible for even spiritually gifted people to comprehend and express before it takes place. Still less can we expect a prophet who sees in the Spirit the essence of the event but thinks in the categories of his own experience to speak of the Flesh and Blood of the Son of Man. Nevertheless, he sees and proclaims the Lord's Sacrifice, which is accomplished in connection with His victory.

Thus, according to the prophet, God's victory and the establishment of the Kingdom of David's Descendant will be connected with the Sacrifice that God Himself will offer and with a feast to which the whole world is invited: all the nations that will see God's judgment, and all creation. From almost this very moment, the feast will become one of the most widespread symbols of the Kingdom of Heaven in Israel's spiritual tradition, which the Lord Jesus Christ will follow when He so often turns to this image.

The chapter ends with incredible and unexpected words, yet words so longed for by the exiles, about the return of the deported and scattered children of God's people. Half a century before King Cyrus and almost six centuries before the New Covenant, the prophet announces that God, who struck and purified Israel, will gather it once more in the Promised Land and never abandon it again. Here, as throughout the book, the prophet returns to his crucial theme of human individuality and personal responsibility. Unlike other prophets who also proclaim that on the last day God will no longer forsake His people, Ezekiel speaks more precisely: “I will leave none of them there any longer... because I will pour out My Spirit.” In other words, the promised outpouring of the Spirit will mean that no person will be separated from God, but God will be close to every person. Once again in the prophet Ezekiel we see a foretelling of the incredible nearness of God that will be granted on the day of Pentecost.

In this prophecy God promises to stand up for His people. The picture of the defeat of Israel's enemies horrifies the imagination. And yet, for you and me, this speaks not of God's cruelty or of His vengefulness, but of the strength of His love for Israel. God does not remain an outside observer of historical upheavals: He intervenes and acts Himself, or through a human being. His action is not limited to words; His Kingdom is not in word but in power.

But in order to see and recognize His power at work in the world, a bond with God is necessary: faith and prophetic insight are necessary. One way to acquire such faith is prayerful reading of the writings of the prophets, for whom God's love, faithfulness, and Kingdom were the most essential reality of their lives.

Those who attack the people are doomed; the Lord will protect them, and what the invaders prepared for their victims will fall upon their own heads. We already know prophecies like these; they have become familiar to us, and that is sad and dangerous in its own way: what we grow used to ceases to be valued, and then we risk acting contrary to warnings we have heard many times. This must be why the threatening images of prophetic speech are so vivid, for their purpose is not to pile on horrors for effect, but to break through the shell behind which the listeners would like to hide from an uncomfortable but approaching reality.

Perhaps for the same reason, the prophecy of the people's salvation from the forces of evil is once again joined to a reminder of the sins that provoked yet another disaster. We have no merit in the Lord's saving us; it is the result of His unfathomable mercy...
