NOTES for Jer 23:23

23 Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off?
Hide

Childlike naivete can at times be very sincere, including when it concerns relationships with God. A scene: a girl about four years old is walking with her mother, who is scolding her for bad behavior. The girl wants to say something in reply, but restrains herself. Her mother says, "Well, say it, say what you think." The girl says, "Later, in the underpass." Both approach the underground passage and go down below. The girl says to her mother, "You are nasty." The mother says, "Why couldn't you say that to me up above?" The girl answers, "Up above God will hear."

The answer of a four-year-old girl could seem amusing and naive if we ourselves were not in many ways like her when it comes to our relationship with God. The fall, humanity's distancing from God, does not begin by chance with the human being hiding from God. Hiding in order to conceal his sin. Perhaps not because of fear of punishment at all, but because he does not want to admit his own inadequacy either to himself or to Him.

Deep in the soul, the overwhelming majority of us believing people would like God never to see our sins. We would like Him to be nearby and look at us when, as it seems to us, we are good and ready to meet Him. For example, during prayer. Or when we are doing something good. But it is better to sin somewhere in a dark corner. Or in an underground passage. Or in the desert, in the forest, in short, farther away from altars and temples.

It seems to us that if God is far away, then He does not see and does not know, that in this respect He is like us: we know little or nothing about those who are far from us at a given moment. With God everything is different, and He reminds us of this through the mouth of His prophet. His nearness means not that He learns something new about us that He did not know before, but that we have found ourselves at the center of His attention, have drawn this attention in some way, that He is going to intervene directly in our life, to enter it in order to change something in it.

And here we quite naturally want to look better than we really are. But God has no need for us to "look" a certain way. He needs us simply to be. As we are. And to let Him into our life. As it is. So as to give Him the possibility of making it, with our participation, of course, what it should be according to His design and plan.

Childlike naivete can at times be very sincere, especially when it concerns one's relationship with God. Here is a typical episode: a girl of about four is walking with her mother, who is scolding her for bad behavior. The girl wants to say something in reply, but holds back. Her mother insists: "Well, say it, say what you think!" The girl brushes it off: "Later, in the underpass!" They both come to the pedestrian underpass and go underground. There the girl declares to her mother: "You are nasty!" Her mother is surprised: "Why couldn't you say that to me up above?" The girl answers: "Up above God will hear!"

The four-year-old girl's answer would be amusing and naive, if we ourselves were not so much like her when it comes to our relationship with God. The fall, this distancing of the human being from God, does not begin by chance with a person trying to hide from Him, hiding in order to conceal sin. Perhaps not because of fear of punishment, but because one does not want to admit one's own failure either to oneself or to Him.

Deep down, the overwhelming majority of us believers would like God never to see our sins. We would like Him to be near and look at us when, as it appears to us, we are good and ready to meet Him: for example, during prayer or when we are doing something good. But it is better to sin somewhere in a dark corner, in an underpass, in the desert, in the forest - in short, far away from altars and churches.

It appears to us that if God is far away, then He neither sees nor knows, and that in this respect He is like us: after all, we too know little or nothing at all about those who are far from us at a given moment. With God everything is different, and through His prophet He reminds us of this. His nearness does not mean that He learns something new about us that He did not know before; it means that we have come into the center of His attention, have somehow drawn that attention, and now He is going to intervene directly in our life, to enter it in order to change something in it.

And here, quite naturally, we want to look better than we really are. But God does not need us to "look" like anything; He needs us simply to be. To be as we are, and to let Him into our life as it is, so that we may give Him the chance to make it, with our participation of course, what it ought to be according to His design and plan.

A question to the point: can it really be that because we feel distant from God, He becomes less God? Is His goodness less, His love less, His omnipotence less? What foolishness!

Perhaps this comes from our "material" experience, which tells us that the effect of something on us weakens as distance increases. Then God's distance even becomes convenient: we can take Him less seriously. We understand that He has reasons to be displeased with us, but if He is far away, then it is not so frightening and we do not need to hurry very much to change. We already begin deliberately pushing Him away from ourselves, building barriers between ourselves and God, anything to avoid falling into the hands of the Living God. All of this, of course, is self-deception. God is always and everywhere the Same. He is always near us, even when we think He is far away. And the point is not to hide from Him in fear or run away, but to seek Him in trust, turn to Him, and draw near to Him.

The question in essence: Can it be true that because we feel ourselves far from God, He becomes less God? Smaller becomes His goodness, smaller His love, smaller His omnipotence? What a stupid thing.

Probably, it goes from our "material" experience, which says that the influence of something on us weakens as we go afar off. So the farness of God turns out even advantageous: we can count less with Him. We understand that He has reasons not to be satisfied with us, but If He is far, then it is not so terrible and we can hurry not too much to change. We already begin purposefully to push Him away from us, to put barriers between us and God - only not to fall into the hands of the Living God. All this is of course self-deceit. God is always and everywhere the Same, He is always next to us, even when we think that He is far off. And the problem is not that in fear we hide from Him or avoids Him, but that in confidence to find Him, to turn to Him, to approach Him.

For Jer 23:1-40
Woe be unto the pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! saith the LORD.
Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people; Ye have scattered my flock, and driven them away, and have not visited them: behold, I will visit upon you the evil of your doings, saith the LORD.
And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all countries whither I have driven them, and will bring them again to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase.
And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD.
Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.
In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that they shall no more say, The LORD liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;
But, The LORD liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.
Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets; all my bones shake; I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his holiness.
10 For the land is full of adulterers; for because of swearing the land mourneth; the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is evil, and their force is not right.
11 For both prophet and priest are profane; yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the LORD.
12 Wherefore their way shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall therein: for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their visitation, saith the LORD.
13 And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria; they prophesied in Baal, and caused my people Israel to err.
14 I have seen also in the prophets of Jerusalem an horrible thing: they commit adultery, and walk in lies: they strengthen also the hands of evildoers, that none doth return from his wickedness: they are all of them unto me as Sodom, and the inhabitants thereof as Gomorrah.
15 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets; Behold, I will feed them with wormwood, and make them drink the water of gall: for from the prophets of Jerusalem is profaneness gone forth into all the land.
16 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD.
17 They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one that walketh after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you.
18 For who hath stood in the counsel of the LORD, and hath perceived and heard his word? who hath marked his word, and heard it?
19 Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked.
20 The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.
21 I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.
22 But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.
23 Am I a God at hand, saith the LORD, and not a God afar off?
24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.
25 I have heard what the prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed.
26 How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies? yea, they are prophets of the deceit of their own heart;
27 Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal.
28 The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath my word, let him speak my word faithfully. What is the chaff to the wheat? saith the LORD.
29 Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?
30 Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that steal my words every one from his neighbour.
31 Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the LORD, that use their tongues, and say, He saith.
32 Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith the LORD.
33 And when this people, or the prophet, or a priest, shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the LORD? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will even forsake you, saith the LORD.
34 And as for the prophet, and the priest, and the people, that shall say, The burden of the LORD, I will even punish that man and his house.
35 Thus shall ye say every one to his neighbour, and every one to his brother, What hath the LORD answered? and, What hath the LORD spoken?
36 And the burden of the LORD shall ye mention no more: for every man's word shall be his burden; for ye have perverted the words of the living God, of the LORD of hosts our God.
37 Thus shalt thou say to the prophet, What hath the LORD answered thee? and, What hath the LORD spoken?
38 But since ye say, The burden of the LORD; therefore thus saith the LORD; Because ye say this word, The burden of the LORD, and I have sent unto you, saying, Ye shall not say, The burden of the LORD;
39 Therefore, behold, I, even I, will utterly forget you, and I will forsake you, and the city that I gave you and your fathers, and cast you out of my presence:
40 And I will bring an everlasting reproach upon you, and a perpetual shame, which shall not be forgotten.

The word that comes from God may be the most precious thing a person possesses: it reveals the deepest meaning of one's life and reveals God coming to meet humanity. Without it, the world sinks into the meaninglessness and banality of its own words. Unfortunately, however, the need to hear God's voice and receive from Him a message about His will can be exploited. Is this not why all kinds of “dream books,” horoscopes, and every imaginable form of fortune-telling have always been so popular? A person thirsts for revelation but receives a wretched substitute produced by “prophets and priests” (healers, sorcerers, magicians...) who, just as in Jeremiah's time, use God's name for their own ends. The prophet is comforted by the knowledge that a time will come when everyone will share in this Word. This is already possible—and whoever seeks will surely find.

The rebukes continue, but once again amid severe warnings we see a ray of hope. The people still have only to go into exile and a new slavery, yet words of prophecy are already sounding about the coming return from captivity - about the fact that the same Lord who once led His people out of Egyptian captivity will free them also from the rule of new conquerors. But more than that, He gives a prophetic promise of the righteous Branch of David. Even if this part of the prophecy was not fully understood by Jeremiah's contemporaries, here the seed of readiness to receive the Savior was planted in their hearts, a seed that would have to sprout over the following centuries.

It must not be accidental that precisely after the prophecy about the One who will become the Good Shepherd, the Lord again returns to denouncing false shepherds and false prophets.

This problem, however, is relevant today as well. And the issue is not only that in every age there have been enough frauds who fooled a trusting public. Perhaps far more dangerous is sincere and selfless self-deception, when a person mistakes his own conclusions, or a projection of the subconscious, the deception of his own heart, for a voice from above. But here prophecy warns of the danger: if former prophets turned away from the Lord, exchanging Him for Baal, then new ones risk exchanging the Lord for their own illusions and dreams.
