NOTES for Jo1 4:18

18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

Why is there “no fear in love”? Why does the fact that fear involves torment make fear an obstacle on the path of love? After all, it may seem that we often suffer when we love. If we think about it, then no, not often.

We suffer if a person does not return our love, that is, when we fear that we are not loved enough in return or that we have been undervalued. Then this is not love, but longing for another person and wounded self-esteem. Perfect love would simply desire the other person's happiness, without self-pity.

We suffer from fear for someone we love... But such fear is doubt in the loved one, if the person is an adult, and distrust of God, if it is a child. Responsibility for a child that prompts us to protect him or her from danger is part of parental love; but panicked fear that something might happen to the child is no sign of greater maternal or paternal feeling.

Fear often appears in relationships: fear of hurting or being hurt, fear of not giving enough love or showing excessive ardor, fear of being oneself, fear of not being accepted... There are very many fears, but they all have one thing in common: fear creates a barrier. It is like a small partition that inevitably increases the distance between people and makes it difficult for the warm current of true love to cross, the love that is God, the love that grants the encounter of person with person and person with God.

Why are fear and love incompatibles? Is God afraid of anything? Certainly, no! Well, it is so because He is almighty... And what of us? Here is John the Evangelist speaks about it: God Himself indwells in the one who loves, because God is love. And we thus have to be afraid of nothing. But if ever there is fear in us there (it is identified by the "torment"), then it is evident that love, God's presence in us is imperfect, insufficient.

There is another important moment here. The apostle John writes that love is manifested in the fulfillment of the commandments. Fear was the main motive for the fulfillment of the commandments in the Old Testament, and this fear paralyzed man. Indeed, commandments indicated what shouldn’t be done, and by longing to fulfill them, man was afraid of doing, in order not to do what is wrong. The new commandment, of which John writes, is formulated differently: do, love one another. The aspiration to fulfill this commandment frees man, manifests in him activity, initiative.

For Jo1 4:13-5:5
13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.
20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?

In ordinary words John speaks of what is simple and natural to him, yet so difficult to grasp with the mind, and still more difficult to experience fully: God's mysterious presence in those who confess Jesus as the Son of God. When this thought truly sinks in, our first reaction is like Peter's when he cried out to Christ: “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). Yet He comes to us precisely to free us from the power of sin.

If God is love, then abiding in love means abiding in God. In unfolding the qualities of love, John stresses that there is no fear in love, whereas fear involves torment. This means that there is no torment in God. If so, how are we to explain the torments of unrepentant sinners? Is it not that, in turning away from God, they have rejected the source of love and fallen under the power of fear, from which they cannot free themselves, however brave a face they may put on? For fear involves torment...

Love for one's brother is the sign of love for God. All people are called to brotherhood; and if we are told to help our neighbours, it is because we must begin with those close at hand, not excuse ourselves by saying we first need to care for those far away. The beginning is always near, within ourselves and close by, but from this little patch of ground we are called to go further, serving the Lord, who seeks to save and transform the whole world.

For Jo1 4:11-18
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

Boldness on the day of judgment... What is the apostle John talking about? Boldness means both courage and confidence. But imagine His judgment. Eye to eye with the only Righteous One... Is it really possible at that judgment to remain calm and confident? The apostle John says that the Lord has given us enough capacity to love, and love can reach such perfection in us that we will act as He does, and therefore will not fear His judgment... Simple? Not simple at all, because this is only a capacity, a possibility. This is what He has given; His gift is boundless, His gift has been given in fullness. But the degree to which we accept His gift is another question. And it depends not on someone or something else, but on us ourselves.
