The revelation about the human being, human nature, life, and destiny is one of the main themes of the Bible, together with the revelation about God and salvation. It is very difficult to express it briefly, so here we will give only the most important points about the nature and destiny of the human being.

At the beginning of Genesis, in the account of the creation of the world, the Bible says that the human being is God's creation. Unlike the creation of the rest of the created world, the creation of the human being is preceded by God's mysterious "eternal counsel": the Creator decides to create the human being, and the Bible presents this as an important fact that corresponds to the human being's exceptional place in creation. The human being is created "in the image and likeness of God." This means that while the human being is part of creation, he is also endowed with qualities that belong to the Creator Himself. According to the teaching of the first chapters of Genesis, human nature is twofold: the human being is material and, at the same time, has a nonmaterial component that the authors of the first chapters of Genesis call a "living soul."

Later biblical texts describe human nature in two ways that do not contradict each other. In his epistles, the apostle Paul distinguishes spirit (Greek πνεῦμα), soul (Greek ψυχή), and flesh (Greek σάρξ) in the human being. In Paul's terminology, the human spirit is the person's nonmaterial, immortal personal component; it is the human spirit that bears the image and likeness of God. The human spirit is marked by will, freedom, and responsibility. The soul includes the nonmaterial mental functions proper to the body, while the flesh consists of matter. Old Testament anthropology distinguishes soul (Hebrew שפנ, nefesh) and flesh (Hebrew חוב, basar) in the human being. At the same time, the Old Testament authors also speak about the human spirit (Hebrew חור, ruah), but by this they mean the "breath of life," life given by God, or life force. The Old Testament authors locate the personal principle in the soul (nefesh). The Bible says that the spiritual principle is central in the human being; the human heart is responsible for all human actions.

This twofold character applies not only to the human being's spiritual and material nature. Two sides are also distinguished in the human being: man and woman. According to the narrative of Gen. 2, woman is created as a "side," an aspect of the human being (Hebrew עלצ means a facet, side, or rib, as does the Greek πλευρά, which translates it).

The Creator gives the human being the task of "cultivating and keeping" the garden of Paradise, where He places him, and commands him to "have dominion" over all living creatures. In a world whose existence is founded on the Creator's will, the human being is called to be a harmonizing principle and to bring divine love into the world. The Bible repeatedly speaks about human smallness and fragility (Ps. 8:5,103:15). Nevertheless, because of the image and likeness of God placed in him, the human being occupies the leading place in the world, and his significance in the world is not lower than that of the angels who stand before God Himself. The human being's falling away from union with God brings a curse on all creation, because creation is connected with God only through the human being.

According to Deuteronomy, human life consists in "loving the Lord God... listening to His voice and holding fast to Him." The word that comes from the Creator's mouth becomes spiritual food for the human being and sustains human existence. Union with God is to become, for the human being, the source of unending, eternal life: "And this is eternal life, that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." Human life unfolds before the face of God: when making a covenant with Abraham, the Lord commands him, "walk before Me and be blameless." According to the Bible, the central content of human life is to be a vessel and source of divine love: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another."

A person's refusal to fulfill these commandments entails suffering and death (Rom. 5:12) as the extreme degree of separation from God, the Source of life. For the salvation of the human being, the Son of God became incarnate, died, and rose again. Therefore union with the Son of God and following His commandment gives a person the possibility of sharing in His resurrection (Rom. 6).

Early works of biblical writing speak about the human being from the standpoint of the common ideas of antiquity. The human person is considered only as part of a whole that exceeds the individual in scale. This supra-personal whole may be humanity, a tribe, or a clan. Only in the prophetic age does the revelation of the human being's unique personal existence enter the biblical context; it is expressed chiefly in the idea of personal responsibility. Late biblical texts, especially New Testament texts, are characterized by firm and consistent personalism. On this basis, the apostle Paul formulates the biblical idea that human beings are both represented in the world by many independent individuals and form a certain mysterious unity in which all people are bound together into one whole. He speaks about Adam, in whom he sees not merely a collective image but all humanity. In the same way, the apostle sees human salvation as union with the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in the one Body of Christ, the Church.
